Orthodontist schooling starts out the same as the schooling required for all other dentists, it is what comes after that which sets the orthodontist schooling apart from the rest. Orthodontists are required to complete a broad scope of schooling starting with a four year Bachelor degree and ending with a post-doctorate level degree.

Bachelor Degree

The required orthodontist schooling starts out with just a typical four year Bachelor level degree. The major course of study should be in one of the fields of science like chemistry. Acceptance into dentistry school can be very competitive so the student needs to earn at the minimum a 3.5 GPA throughout the course of their Bachelor degree at an accredited university before they can get into the dentistry school of their choice. Additionally, toward the end of the Bachelor program, the student will need to pass their acceptance exam, or the DAT. This will actually be more of a determining factor to the admittance into dentistry school than the GPA throughout the Bachelor program.

Dentistry School

Once the student has earned the Bachelor degree as well as passed the DAT, they must then go through an additional four years of dentistry school. This part of the orthodontist schooling is required for any kind of dentist from the family practice dentist on up through the oral surgeon and everything in between. The graduation of this program will result in the student earning their DDS or DMD which is the degree required to practice basic dentistry. It is important that the student earns top grades throughout their dentistry school so they can gain admittance into the final step in their orthodontist schooling.

The post-doctorate education is the final step in orthodontist schooling. This program takes about two to three years and is compiled of courses that are specialized in the anatomy of the face and teeth as well as other features specific to the field of orthodontics like braces and how to construct the orthodontic devices in a way that will help their patients. This program will also include clinical training opportunities that will help the student to know how to put to use their new found skills they have learned throughout the last decade of orthodontist schooling.
